On the death of Imogen Stuart

Imogen Stuart, one of Ireland’s leading sculptors, has died. Born in Berlin, she came to Ireland in the late 1940s and died on 25 th of March 2024 at the age of 96. Her artworks from a career spanning over 70 years are influenced by German Expressionism, Romanesque style, but especially by Christian literature and Irish art and culture. Most important works of the mother of three daughters include the Angel of Peace on the exterior of St Teresa's Carmelite Church on Dublin’s Clarendon Street and the main doors of Galway Cathedral.

Today, her works of art can be found in public spaces and churches around the country – including St. Finian’s Church, where three of Stuarts’s sculptures are exhibited. These depict scenes from the life and work of Jesus, such as the story of Jesus and Peter on the sea and Thomas the Apostle doubting the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The Lutheran Church in Ireland is very grateful and feels honoured to be able to exhibit a piece of her work.
